Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways, causing uneven shoulders, hips, and a visible curvature of the back. Scoliosis is most common in young females although it can happen with any age and gender.

Scoliosis

Causes

There are two types of scoliosis:

  • Structural Scoliosis

Structural scoliosis is caused by an abnormal curvature of the spine that results from a congenital condition, developmental abnormalities, or degeneration of the spine due to conditions such as osteoporosis. This type of scoliosis is permanent.

  • Functional Scoliosis

Functional scoliosis, on the other hand, is caused by imbalances in the muscles surrounding the spine. The curve is a result of poor posture or muscular imbalances, which can be corrected with proper care.

Symptoms

The symptoms of scoliosis can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Uneven shoulders
  • A visible curve in the spine
  • Uneven hips
  • Muscle spasms
  • Breathing difficulties/Shortness of breath due to compression of lungs
  • Chronic body pain
  • Chest pain
