In today’s digital era, smartphones have become an indispensable part of our lives. However, the excessive use of smartphones can lead to various health issues, including neck pain.
According to recent studies, the prevalence of neck pain associated with smartphone use has significantly increased. The biomechanics behind text neck syndrome involve the adoption of a forward head posture and increased strain on the neck muscles and ligaments. Prolonged smartphone use can negatively impact posture and musculoskeletal health, leading to discomfort and pain.(Ayhualem et al., 2021)
Maintaining a posture where your head is bent 60 degrees can exert significant strain on your neck. Despite the average weight of the human head being around 5-6 kg, this position can make the muscles work against nearly 30 kg, resulting in fatigue and muscle tiredness.
The effects of neck pain caused by smartphone use can range from short-term discomfort to long-term complications. Common effects include muscle stiffness, reduced range of motion, headaches, and the potential development of chronic conditions like spinal degeneration and nerve damage. Moreover, this can impact daily activities, productivity, and overall quality of life.
In addition to the practical solutions mentioned above, seeking professional care from Well-Balanced Family Chiropractic can provide effective management and prevention of text neck syndrome. Our team of skilled chiropractors are well-versed in addressing the musculoskeletal challenges associated with excessive smartphone use. Through tailored care, including chiropractic adjustments, rehab exercises, and ergonomic guidance, we can help alleviate neck pain, improve posture, and promote optimal spinal health. Take a step towards a pain-free and healthy neck by contacting us to schedule an appointment today.

Hi everyone, I’m Hayley! I’m originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and I found my path to chiropractic through a lifelong involvement in sports. Growing up, I was active in gymnastics, but sustained lower back injuries from gymnastics at a young age. That experience introduced me to chiropractic care and shaped my belief that healthcare should focus not only on recovery, but also on prevention and long-term wellbeing.
I began my career in KL, working there for two years before moving to Singapore to further my professional growth. As a chiropractor, I take a holistic approach to care, supporting spinal health and nervous system function so patients can move and function better. I believe chiropractic care is suitable for all ages, from children to seniors, and I aim to help individuals move with greater ease, experience fewer aches, and stay active in their daily lives.
I have a special interest in caring for pregnant mothers and children, as these are critical stages of growth and development. I am currently pursuing certification in the Webster Technique to further support expectant mothers throughout their pregnancy journey.
Outside of work, I value rest as chiropractic care is physically demanding. I also enjoy exercising, playing computer games to unwind, and travelling whenever I can to recharge and return refreshed.
