Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)

DJD, also known as osteoarthritis, is a common condition that affects joints in the body especially hips, knees and spine. It occurs when the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones in a joint begins to wear down, causing irritation between bones, discs and nerves. This leads to symptoms like pain, stiffness, and inflammation. As the disease progresses, the bones can become damaged, leading to the development of bone spurs or cysts within the affected area.

Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)

Causes

Posture

When we have a bad posture, the spine and joints are not well supported, and it can increase pressure on certain areas of the body, causing them to wear down more quickly.

Age

As people age, the cartilage in their joints can break down and wear away, due to the constant pressure of gravity on the body.

Genetics

Some people may be more predisposed to developing degenerative joint disease due to genetic factors.

Obesity

Being overweight can put extra stress on the joints, leading to increased wear and tear.

Injuries

Previous joint injuries or overuse can contribute to the development of early degeneration.

Symptoms

The symptoms of degenerative joint disease can vary depending on the severity of the condition and the joints affected, but common symptoms may include:

  • Pain and stiffness in the affected joint, particularly after periods of inactivity or overuse
  • Swelling and inflammation in the joint
  • A creaking or grating sound when the joint is moved
  • Reduced range of motion in the joint
