Elbow Pain

Elbow pain is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. It is usually caused by overuse and injury. The pain can be localised to the elbow joint or may radiate to the forearm or wrist.

Elbow pain can be a symptom of two distinct conditions: tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. While they share similarities, they are separate conditions. Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a type of overuse injury that occurs when the tendons that attach to the outer part of the elbow become inflamed or damaged. It is commonly caused by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm, particularly in activities like tennis or racquet sports.

On the other hand, golfer’s elbow, or medial epicondylitis, affects the tendons that attach to the inner part of the elbow. This condition is caused by repetitive flexing and twisting of the wrist and can occur in golfers or individuals who frequently perform gripping or throwing motions.

Elbow Pain

Causes

Repetitive motions

Overuse of the elbow joint can lead to strain and inflammation of the tendons and ligaments around the joint. For example, tennis, weight lifting, typing or housework.

Trauma

A sudden injury, such as a fall or blow to the elbow.

Nerve entrapment

Pinched nerves in the elbow, such as ulnar nerve entrapment, can cause pain, tingling, and numbness in the elbow, forearm, and hand.

Inflammatory conditions

Conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or gout.

Symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness in the elbow joint or surrounding area
  • Stiffness and decreased range of motion in the elbow joint
  • Swelling or redness around the elbow joint
  • Weakness or loss of grip strength in the affected arm
  • Numbness or tingling in the forearm or hand
