Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD)

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) is a general term used to describe various conditions that affect the joints and muscles related to jaw movement. TMJD can cause pain and discomfort in the jaw, face and neck, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks like eating and talking.

Causes

Stress

Stress can induce teeth grinding or clenching which can put excessive pressure on the jaw.

Eating habit

Chewing on one side can cause muscle imbalance in the jaw.

Neck issues

Muscles that control the jaws are closely related to the neck, people with neck problems often suffer with TMJ disorders as well.

Jaw injuries

injuries to the jaw joint, such as a blow or impact.

Misaligned bites

Misalignment of the bites can cause uneven pressure on the jaw.

Symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint, face, neck, or shoulders
